Top 10 Colorado Springs Christmas Activities {Updated for 2020}

Looking to experience a Colorado Springs Christmas this year? December may be the busiest month for nearly every person, but it is definitely the most fun! With parties to attend, shopping to do, and decorations to put up, sometimes it is good to get away with the family and simply enjoy each other. There are activities abound that are suitable for a lovely date night out or fun with the family. colorado springs christmas activities

I took on the task of wading through endless activities for the month of December to highlight what I suggest are the Top Ten Picks for the Colorado Springs area. Enjoy one, or enjoy them all! I’d love to hear from you if your family gives any of these events a go. Let me know what you think.

Our list for 2020 is a bit different (as is everything this year). Sadly, many events that we love have not yet released information for this year or have cancelled. Even if your favorites have been cancelled, we are leaving them here so you can bookmark this post and have the information when they come back in 2021. We’ve included a few bonus events at the bottom of the post!

#1  SKATE IN THE PARK, Downtown Colorado Springs, November 20 – January 31, 2020

Some of the best shopping around is in Downtown Colorado Springs. Plan a day out with your family to shop, eat at one of the many local restaurants, grab hot cocoa at the Storybook Coffee Co., and ice skate among the Christmas lights. A perfect way to make lasting memories with those you love. You’ll find the ice-skating rink in Acacia Park off of Tejon Street and Platte Ave. Reservations are required for 2020 to allow for social distancing. Details here.

#2  SIMPICH CHRISTMAS MARIONETTE PERFORMANCE: The Puppet Maker, TBD for 2020simpich christmas colorado springs

Have you seen a marionette show? Perhaps you have ideas of silly puppets hanging from strings, or your only experience is from seeing them on a movie like Sound of Music. However, the Simpich family takes the look and talent of a marionette show to a whole new level. The puppets are amazing in and of themselves, but then you add the performance of the very skilled David Simpich and you enter into a world that dazzles young and old.  Performances such as these are rarely available anywhere else. #3 SANTA EXPRESS TRAIN, Royal Gorge, November 19-December 30, 2020

Start a wonderful holiday tradition with the little ones in your family this year by booking a trip on the Santa Express Train. Food, cookies, hot cocoa and Christmas music are all part of the fun as the train travels to the North Pole for a visit from Santa and his elves. Tickets sell out every year so book early to reserve your seats. Masks are required when not seated. Tickets and details here.

#4  THE NUTCRACKER, Pikes Peak Center, cancelled for 2020

The Christmas season is not complete without Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker! Delight your children, or your inner child, with this traditional Christmas ballet. Every year the Oklahoma City Ballet visits to delight us with this Thanksgiving tradition. You can dress up or go casual. Allow the Sugarplum fairy and her Kingdom of Sweets to usher in the magic of Christmas. Dates, Times & Tickets.

#5 PALMER LAKE STAR LIGHTING, Palmer Lake, cancelled for 2020

This event includes a chili supper at the Palmer Lake Fire Department and the annual lighting of the Palmer Lake star. Raffle tickets and silent auction items will also be available. More info here.

#6 CHRISTMAS AT GLEN EYRIE, cancelled for 2020

Celebrate the Christmas of your dreams at one of the several events hosted at the magnificent Glen Eyrie Castle. If Old English is your cup of tea, you will be delighted to participate in any one of these events:

  • Madrigal Banquet: Set in the grandeur of The Great Hall of The Castle, the 16th century-style banquet is sure to fill you with awe this Christmas season. Make it a romantic getaway with an overnight stay in the castle! Click here for reservations and information.

#7  NATURE WALKS WITH SANTA Dec. 12 & 19, 2020

Take a hike with Saint Nick and enjoy an interactive reading of “Twas the Night before Christmas.” Make paper snowflakes and enjoy live music after the hike. Click here for more information.

#8  HOLIDAY SHOW, The Broadmoor Hotel, TBD for 2020broadmoor hotel decorated for Christmas

Christmas isn’t Christmas in Colorado Springs without a trip to the Broadmoor Hotel! They have several events and packages to tantalize your family over the holidays. Choose from several dates for a taste of wassail and holiday music. Afterwards, take a romantic walk around the luxuriously decorated hotel, sit and be mesmerized by the thousands of holiday lights, and explore their famous gingerbread houses. #9  CHRISTMAS CONCERT, Village 7 Presbyterian Church, TBD for 2020

This special concert will feature holiday classics for the first half and Messiah choruses for the second half. The Village 7 choir and creative team never disappoint-this is one of the top performances in the area.  More information here. 

#10  ROCK LEDGE RANCH HOLIDAY EVENING, Garden Of The Gods, TBD for 2020

Bundle up and enjoy wagon rides, lantern tours, musical entertainment and other Victorian and Edwardian holiday fun! Meet St. Nicholas and nibble on refreshments. Adults $8, Children $5 (ages 5 and under are free). Information for the Holiday Evening has not yet been released, but they have scheduled Holiday Tea and Tour events here.

What a fun holiday season this will be! There are so many exciting options, and since I’ve only listed ten, it will be hard to just pick one…so don’t! Fill up your calendar with memories and laughter. Satisfy the child inside as well as indulge your tastes with the finer things.   • CRAFT A YULE LOG, December 5, 2020
    This workshop will teach you about the origins of the beautiful yule log and then provide materials to make your own. More info here.
  • CHRISTMAS AT THE RANCH, December 4-20, 2020
    You can help celebrate the Flying W Ranch reopening this year after being closed due to damage from the Waldo Canyon Fire in 2012. The Cowboy Christmas Jubilee includes a delicious dinner and live musical show by the Flying W Wranglers. Details and tickets here.

    We love to visit the Broadmoor to look at the Gingerbread display! Don’t miss it, then sit by the outdoor fire for a few minutes and enjoy!
